GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Grosse Pointe Woods officials have scheduled a bid opening Jan. 30 regarding the planned updates at the Lake Front Park marina, located on Jefferson Avenue.

Once city officials secure the bids, they will recommend a construction company to perform the work to City Council.

Grosse Pointe Woods Director of Public Services Frank Schulte believes the recommendation will go before the council at its Feb. 5 meeting. If the item does not get on the agenda that evening, then it should be up for a vote at the Feb. 26 City Council meeting.

City officials are planning to replace the power boxes at the marina. The power boxes — also referred to as power pedestals — currently serve four boats, but with the new power boxes, each station will be able to serve two boats.

A power box is a connection that runs shore power cords to docked boats for uses including playing the radio, recharging batteries or running air conditioning units.

Also planned with the marina updates is a new water main system.

The new power boxes and water spigots will be contained in one unit, and the power boxes will light up at night. There are 238 boat wells at the marina, and city officials plan to install 119 power boxes. The project is estimated to cost $304,000.

“The old boxes were falling apart,” Schulte said. “The aesthetics will be much nicer.”

The marina updates are expected to be completed by May 15.
