Man threatened at gunpoint after Internet date
Posted September 26, 2013
A man looking to meet up with a date he met on the Internet instead ended up running from a gun on Maxine Street in the early morning hours of Sept. 22.
The 37-year-old man told St. Clair Shores Police that he met a woman on datehookup.com and had arranged to meet her at his home at 2:30 a.m. that day. When she arrived she texted him to say she was “shy” and to ask if he would please come out to the car.
“Upon exiting the house (the victim) was met by an unknown black male with a red bandanna, red hat, armed with a blue steel semi-automatic handgun,” Detective Sgt. Jay Cohoe said.
Cohoe said suspect, believed to be about 18-24 years old and 6-foot tall with a thin build, ordered the victim to the ground and told him to give them any valuables.
After that, Cohoe said, the suspect ordered the man to get into the trunk of his vehicle, a 2001-2003 black Pontiac Bonneville with 20-inch five-star rims.
“The victim then got up, started running, yelling for help, and the suspect fled to the passenger door driven by a black female,” Cohoe said, explaining that they believed the driver to be the same woman the victim was supposed to be meeting that night.
The suspects didn’t get into the house but took some personal items from the victim. He was not injured.
“This has happened before,” said Lt. David Centala, describing an older case the department handled. “A date through MySpace, he meets the female, they go out to dinner.”
He said in that case, the woman opened a window in the bathroom before the couple went to dinner. Then when they went on their date, her real boyfriend came from around the corner and got into the home.
“He texts her when he’s done so she can wrap up the date,” Centala said.
“You should probably meet these people in very public places, particularly because you don’t know who’s really behind the computer screen,” Cohoe advised. “It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, you can become a victim.”
Police are still investigating the incident.
