At about 1:15 p.m. July 10, a 90-year-old Berkley man was ejected, run over and killed by his own vehicle in a parking lot at 4600 Investment Drive, near Long Lake and Crooks roads.
According to Troy Police Sgt. Meghan Lehman, police believe the deceased, Richard Blanchard, was keeping a medical appointment at the address. Investigators believe he parked his 2011 Chrysler Town & Country and was trying to turn off the engine using the push button start while his driver’s door was open. The vehicle reversed and crashed into four parked cars. He was ejected and run over by his vehicle, Lehman said.
Blanchard was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was not wearing a seatbelt, according to reports.
“We don’t know how the vehicle got into reverse,” Lehman said. “It remains under investigation.”
Medical staff from a nearby office responded to the scene and rendered aid until first responders from Alliance Mobile Health arrived, according to reports.
The Oakland County Medical Examiner also responded to the scene. Blanchard was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Witnesses are asked to contact Troy police at (248) 524-3477.
