Looking Back: Miss Martha Thomas — Bathing Beauty Winner 1930
Posted June 17, 2014
Miss Martha Thomas, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Thomas of 118 Court St. in Mount Clemens, was awarded 1st place in the Detroit Regional Yacht Racing Association bathing beauty contest during the two-day annual Yachtsman’s Regatta festival in June of 1930. Several thousand people attended the regatta held at the Denmarsh Hotel and enjoyed a variety of entertainment. “Baldy” Wetzel, a famous comedian and pianist, entertained the crowd throughout the festival. There was a boxing match and a vaudeville show. Miss Mt. Clemens (Kathryn Ullrich) and the Queen of Michigan (Miss Foster) threw roses out to the audience. Martha Thomas’ son, Mr. George Rastique, donated this photograph and her trophy to the Crocker House Museum. The trophy reads “1st Prize won by Miss Martha Thomas at D.R.Y.A. Beauty Contest at Denmarsh Hotel June 22, 1930.” The Denmarsh Hotel was located at the mouth of the Clinton River, along North River Road where the Lighthouse Restaurant recently stood.
