A classical scholar who taught at the respected Detroit Central High School, Henry Sherrard was one of the eminent educators of the Detroit schools. He was the cofounder of Detroit University School (today’s University Liggett) in 1899, and he has an elementary school named for him in Detroit. He married Charlotte Berry (they are pictured here), the oldest daughter of prominent businessman Joseph Berry, who was active in civic and charity organizations, including the women’s suffrage movement. She was president of the Michigan League of Women Voters.
