EASTPOINTE — The Friends of the Eastpointe Memorial Library will celebrate their 30th anniversary at the library, 15875 Oak Ave., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 30.
During the Eastpointe City Council meeting March 7, Councilwoman Sarah Lucido read a proclamation to congratulate and thank the Friends.
President of the Friends of the Eastpointe Memorial Library Nancy Sarmaga and Vice President Jessica Cutright accepted the proclamation from the council.
Cutright explained that she became a member of the Friends after receiving an invitation in the mail.
“I don’t remember how long I’ve been a Friend, but I do remember getting an invitation in the mail years ago, and I said, ‘Yeah. For $5, why not?’ And I’m currently the vice president of the Friends,” said Cutright.
The anniversary celebration originally was scheduled for March 9, but due to power outages that affected the library, the event was postponed.
According to Sarmaga, the Friends group was formed on March 4, 1987.
“The second Saturday of every month we have our meetings, and we do all the fundraisers, and all the programming that we have for children and adults is completely paid for by the Friends group,” she said.
To become a Friend of the library, membership costs $5 a year, and individuals don’t have to live in Eastpointe.
“We support the core missions of the library through various fundraisers, such as book sales and Cloverleaf throughout the year,” said Sarmaga.
For 45 minutes at 6 p.m. at the anniversary celebration, Jeff Wawrzaszek will put on a magic show for attendees.
“For our 30th anniversary, we’re going to be celebrating with a magician, and we’re also going to have a raffle and free giveaways. There will be cake and refreshments afterwards,” she said.
“We want everyone to come out and have fun to see what we’re all about,” said Sarmaga.
