STERLING HEIGHTS/WARREN — The characters that have filled the pages of Dr. Seuss books for decades will sing and dance their way across the Warren Consolidated School of Performing Arts stage March 24-25.

More than 50 talented WCSPA students from Cousino, Sterling Heights and Warren Mott high schools will perform the Dr. Seuss favorite “Seussical, JR.” this Friday and Saturday. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. both nights. The WCSPA is located inside Sterling Heights High School, 12901 15 Mile Road.

In “Seussical, JR.,” the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant as he discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called Who’s. Horton must protect the Who’s from a world of naysayers and dangers. He also must guard an abandoned egg that has been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.

“Dr. Seuss uses rhythmic storytelling in combination with a distinctly visual style, drawing the reader into his books through poetic language and imagery,” director Erik Hart said in a prepared statement. “This is why Dr. Seuss books and their illustrations often help children learn to love reading. We certainly hope to inspire many lifelong readers with our live musical in celebration of March Is Reading Month.”

According to a WCSPA press release, SHHS freshman Shawn Marko plays Horton the Elephant and SHHS freshman Delaney Evennou was cast as the Cat in the Hat.

The WCSPA is an award-winning, nationally recognized program specializing in all aspects of theater. Classes involve a daily, two-hour, in-depth program set in a professional working environment. WCSPA classes are offered to ninth- through 12th-graders enrolled in any of the three WCS high schools: SHHS, Warren Mott and Cousino.

A portion of Saturday’s proceeds will benefit the local Blessings in a Backpack, with a raffle to be held at intermission. All seating is reserved and all tickets cost $10. Box office and lobby doors open one hour prior to showtime. To purchase tickets in advance, call (586) 825-2525, ext. 1, or visit wcs kid.net/wcspa.
