C & G staffers earn Excellence in Journalism honors
The Detroit Society of Professional Journalists honored five C & G Newspapers reporters with awards April 16 during the annual Excellence in Journalism banquet.
Pictured from left, Jessica Strachan, reporter for the Southfield Sun, was given third place in the profile feature category for her story “Remembering Viola Liuzzo”; Sarah Wojcik, reporter for the Shelby-Utica News, was given first place in the open government category for her story “Nightingale lawsuit settled for $745,000”; Terry Oparka, reporter for the Troy Times, won honorable mention in the breaking news reporting category for her story “Cipriano pleads — jury selection continues”; K. Michelle Moran, reporter for the Grosse Pointe Times, was given first place in the personality profile category for her story “Sheer tenacity: Park man celebrates his 50th anniversary as a barber,” and honorable mention in the best consumer watchdog category for her story “Noncompliant sex offender sought”; and Robert Guttersohn, reporter for the Royal Oak Review, was given second place in the best localization of a national story category for his story “U.S. Navy cuts funding to regional sea cadet program,” and first place in the news photography category for a photo appearing in the story “Police seek answers after roommate murder-suicide.”
