SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At approximately 5 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, Shelby Township police and fire personnel responded to a single-vehicle crash on 23 Mile Road near Sandshores Drive, between Dequindre and Ryan roads.

The driver, a 29-year-old Sterling Heights man and the only occupant of the dark-colored Jeep, was trapped inside the vehicle, and first responders pronounced him deceased at the scene of the crash, according to Shelby Township Police Lt. Jeff Daniel.

Daniel said the initial investigation led investigators to believe that speed and alcohol were factors in the early morning crash.

“(The crash occurred on) the curves when going westbound on 23 Mile before you get to Yates Cider Mill,” he said. “We suspect speed was one of the factors, (as well as alcohol due to) evidence in the vehicle.”

He said the Jeep hit a tree.

Daniel said police were withholding the name of the driver out of respect for his family.
