MOUNT CLEMENS/MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Residents of Macomb County communities served by the Sheriff’s Office can have a better understanding of what’s going on in their neighborhoods with the Jan. 1 launch of the new Crime Incident Web Map.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the interactive application shows department activity and crime incidents in a user-friendly interface.

“This is something that allows us to be more transparent and to provide information to citizens so they know what’s going on in and around their community,” Wickersham said. “We want to provide this vital information to the communities we police.”

Sgt. Renee Yax said the map is not only a tool for residents to see what’s occurring around them, but it will also allow them to submit information about crime incidents that have already been reported.

A link to the map can be found on the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office website, sheriff.macombgov.org/sheriff-home, under the Highlights section. Yax said it will contain crime incident and sheriff activity data from the past week. The data is tracked by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office and powered by the Macomb County Planning and Economic Development Department.

Wickersham said the info will be updated every 24 hours, although due to the sensitive nature of ongoing investigations and certain crime incidents, not all incidents will be included.

Wickersham said the application replaces the former Crimedar software that was launched approximately eight years ago. He said the format became obsolete and was eventually shut down due to ongoing maintenance difficulties. Shortly thereafter, his office was approached by the county’s Planning and Economic Development and Information Technology departments to launch a new, more robust mapping system.

“This new system will be very user friendly,” Wickersham said.
