Man killed crossing I-75 on foot

Police are seeking witnesses to a traffic crash that claimed the life of a 28-year-old Oakland Township man who was hit by a car as he crossed southbound Interstate 75, north of 14 Mile, on foot at 9:35 p.m. Nov. 29. 

Troy police Sgt. Meghan Lehman said the man,  Nicholas Smith, had been driving northbound on Interstate 75, then parked on the left shoulder and crossed the freeway on foot. It is not known why he was trying to walk across the freeway, Lehman said. 

According to police, a 50-year-old Waterford woman driving a silver 2015 Jeep Cherokee struck the man, who died at the scene. The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene of the crash. 

Police said the driver of the Cherokee sustained minor injuries and was transported from the scene by paramedics to Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
