UTICA — Every year, Jim Langeveld and his wife, Stephanie, host a euchre party in Utica to keep their son’s name alive and to help people who are currently going through a tough time.

The euchre party will take place this Saturday night.

Their son, also named Jim, was a family practice physician at Troy Beaumont Hospital who passed away on Sept. 11, 2002, at the age of 30, leaving behind his wife and young son. The younger Langeveld was waiting for a bone marrow transplant. He was a doctor and went to school for 24 of his 30 years, and he was only able to practice for five months.

Jim said that his son graduated from his residency at Troy Beaumont Hospital in July 2001, and he had trouble breathing while he was doing his rounds in October 2001, so he had a chest X-ray while at the hospital.

“He wanted to help people, and now this is keeping his name alive (by) helping people the best way that he can: with bone marrow transplants and personal expenses,” said Jim.

The Dr. James Langeveld Bone Marrow Transplant Patient Support Fund helps adult patients at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center with personal expenses not covered by insurance.

Jim said that since they started the fund, they have raised about $250,000.

Jim and three other men work with Utica High School to provide a $1,500 scholarship to a senior who wants to go into the medical profession. They have done so for 16 years.

This year, Dr. Jim’s 12th annual euchre party will take place Jan. 27 at the St. Lawrence K of C Hall, 44425 Utica Road, which is located west of Van Dyke Avenue and south of M-59. Check-in will begin at 6 p.m., and euchre will start at 7 p.m. The cost is $25 per person and includes pizza, popcorn and refreshments. There will be cash prizes, door prizes and a 50-50 raffle.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older and should bring quarters for euchre.

All proceeds from the euchre party will benefit the Dr. James Langeveld Bone Marrow Transplant Patient Support Fund at the University of Michigan.
