ST. CLAIR SHORES — Beef stew in bread bowls, a live band, raffles and a costume contest.

If you’re a member of the St. Clair Shores Senior Activities Center, this is Halloween.

About 80 members of the center came together to celebrate with costumes that were spooky, fun and scary in the first party hosted at the Senior Center since construction began on the addition and renovations earlier this year.

“These parties are always a blast,” said member Pete Minjoe, of St. Clair Shores. “The food is always good and the people, can’t beat ’em.

“We come here every day, and when it was under construction, we were lost.”

Members rocked out to tunes played by the Senior Di$counts, a band that includes members of the center, and competed for prizes for the best overall costume and the scariest.

“It’s always fun seeing (other members) dressed up,” said Betty Bladdick, of St. Clair Shores, who won runner-up in the costume contest with a pirate costume. “The band is always good and the food is excellent, so what’s not to like?”

“It’s really the first party that we’re having with the new kitchen,” said Senior Center Director Carly Podzikowski Oct. 25.

She said renovations are nearly finished at the center, which has its new welcome desk area installed. She and assistant coordinator Erin Monahan are still working in a temporary office; their new space, with a window open to the lobby of the center, is still under construction, as are portions of the outside of the building. Landscaping will be completed in the spring, she said, and she’s working to put together a purchase order for new furniture to outfit the center.

“We’re closer to getting Wi-Fi back. There’s still growing pains. Everybody’s adjusting to everything,” she said.

But the renovations have sparked registrations, she said.

“We just got bombarded with new members,” she said, explaining that since July they’ve signed up about 20 new members each week.
