BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — It isn’t your average deli, and that’s probably why Eagle readers voted it Best Restaurant for Sandwiches in C & G Newspapers’ 2005 Restaurant Contest.

Just one visit to Steve’s Deli and it’s clear that a great deal of hard work and heart go into every sandwich, bowl of soup and salad.

The restaurant, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in October, is located at 6646 Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Township.

Husband and wife team Steve and Joanee Hurwitz own the restaurant, which has been expanded three times since its inception.

“We used to own the Plaza Deli in Southfield, but that wasn’t anything like this,” said Joanee.

Steve’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and according to Joanee, does a ton of catering and carryout.

Customers can even stop in and pick up an entire dinner spread, with everything homemade.

“We take a very personal interest in everything we offer,” said Joanee. “We go to New York a couple of times a year to attend some of the fancy food shows. We bring back a wide variety of special candies and treats to sell.”

Those with a sweet tooth can also feed their craving with cheesecakes imported from New York’s Carnegie Deli.

Judy Goldsmith, a Bloomfield Hills resident who voted for Steve’s Deli in the Restaurant Contest — in which readers mailed in ballots with their favorite picks for eateries in seven categories — said that although she doesn’t have a favorite sandwich, she loves the variety of options offered there.

“The food is always good, and it’s great for carryout,” said Goldsmith.

Joanee said the most popular sandwich on the menu is the #3, also known as the Reuben, a hot corned beef sandwich with melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on grilled rye bread.

Some of the other daily offerings include chicken potpie, buttermilk fried chicken, turkey meatloaf, and a variety of side dishes displayed in the glass cases on carryout side of the restaurant.

Combination sandwiches range from hot pastrami and roasted turkey Reuben to hot corned beef and chopped chicken liver. For those interested in a lighter sandwich option, there is Steve’s veggie sandwich and the vegetarian Reuben.

There are daily soups available, and the choice is usually among seven, with everything from classic chicken noodle to matzoh ball, sweet and sour cabbage and mushroom barley.

“We offer specials each day and we love to decorate for the holidays,” said Joanee.

The restaurant is currently done up in shiny green shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day and everyone is encouraged to stop in for some corned beef and hash.

Steve’s is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week for carryout. The restaurant hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

The restaurant employs 50 people and can seat up to 80 customers at a time.
