TROY — For the second year, Troy families who make the Christmas tree lighting and Santa’s arrival at Troy City Hall an annual tradition can continue the fun at the Troy Public Library and the Troy Community Center.

The Athens High School concert choir will sing holiday carols as the Troy High School drumline marches in with Santa, who will light a 28-foot Colorado blue spruce at Veterans Plaza, at Troy City Hall. Hot cocoa and sweets will be served, provided by Tim Hortons.

Tim Hortons will also provide refreshments on the lighted walkway between the library and the Community Center.

New this year, the library will offer activities geared toward children under age 5, and the Community Center will offer activities for those over age 5.

Reindeer and elves will be outside the library, and reindeer games, igloo building, a DIY hand bell station, a selfie station, a snowball zone, a candy cane crawl and a twinkly light garland craft will be offered inside the library.

At the Community Center, attendees can enjoy an open swim, inflatables and a performance by the Snow Sisters. There will be a photo booth, and a Nosh Pit food truck will be located at the south entrance of the center.

“Everyone is welcome everywhere,” Elaine Bo, recreation director, said in reference to the age-geared activities. However, strollers will not be allowed inside the buildings. There will be a designated parking area for strollers.

The event was initially held at the library and expanded to the Community Center for the first time last year.

Community Affairs Director Cindy Stewart said that having the event the same night as the Christmas tree lighting allows people who celebrate the Christmas tree lighting “to extend the fun. Why not continue the fun at the library and Community Center? People wanted a really awesome winter family event,” Stewart said.

“It’s cool to watch families come in, be together, take pictures and enjoy all the activities,” said Bo.

A trolley will run between the library and the Community Center.
