WARREN — A 76-year-old resident was treated for smoke inhalation after an early morning house fire that claimed the life of one of her dogs in the 7000 block of Hudson on Aug. 18.
Warren Deputy Fire Chief Larry Speck said fire crews were dispatched to the home, south of Nine Mile Road and east of Mound, at about 2:37 a.m. after a woman reported a fire in her kitchen.
“The owner stated she went downstairs to check on her dogs. When she got down there she noticed that the kitchen was on fire,” Speck said. “The homeowner attempted to remove the dogs and suffered from smoke inhalation, and was transported to Bi-County Hospital.”
Speck said the fire had spread from the kitchen to the attic of the home when units arrived.
He said the responding crews advanced a line into the attic and put the fire out.
“One dog was pulled (out) and given oxygen with good result. The other dog was deceased,” Speck said.
Firefighters with the Warren Fire Department’s Engine 1, Engine 2, Squad 2, Rescue 6 and Truck 1 responded to the fire. The responding units included firefighters from Station No. 1, which has been closed much of the time this summer when available manpower in the department dips below stated levels necessary to keep various facilities and vehicles in service.
Speck said investigators later determined that the cause of the fire was electrical, most likely a result of faulty wiring in the older home.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which caused an estimated $35,000 in structural damage.
