Farmers market back in Utica

UTICA — The downtown farmers market is back for a second year beginning on Mother’s Day, said Shelby Township resident Vernon McClain.
But because the riverfront property that his market occupied during 2009, just west of the library on the south side of Auburn Road, will be under construction as the hike and bike trail is built this year, the market will be moving to the north side of Auburn Road at Moscone Drive, in front of the Department of Public Works.
Mayor Jacqueline Noonan said City Council will have to amend the market’s ordinance, enacted last year for McClain’s proposal, to extend the time frame allowed for the market from four to six months in order for McClain to open earlier this year, on May 9. Last year’s market wasn’t even approved until mid-July.
“I assume it will even be bigger and better than last year, but it was well-received last year,” she said of the market, which is sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority.
McClain said he’s going to expand this year to have annual and perennial flowers that he’ll be selling before the Michigan produce is in season.
“We’re hoping it will do more (to) get us more exposure,” he said.
He’ll be open every day of the week again this year, but hasn’t determined specific hours yet. He’s also hoping to install some lighting and security cameras to combat a few thefts that occurred in 2009.
