SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 17-year-old Clinton Township man is in custody after leading police on a Sunday chase along M-59.
Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Leman said Clinton Township police put out a be-on-the-lookout alert to local police stations in the early afternoon of Jan. 10 after the suspect allegedly stole a red Ford Taurus.
“One of our officers, within minutes of the BOL, spotted the vehicle on M-59,” Leman said. “When he attempted to pull the vehicle over, the vehicle and suspect took off.”
The suspect led police on a chase west on M-59, running red lights and causing minor damage to other motorists along the way. One passing vehicle even lost a mirror as the suspect sideswiped it while running a red light.
The suspect “got up to M-59 and Mound, ran another one (and) went into the area where Filippa’s restaurant was, hit some brush and trees and that,” Leman said.
After the crash, the suspect ran into a nearby apartment complex.
Leman said officers from Sterling Heights, Utica, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office and Rochester helped to set up a perimeter around the apartment complex.
“We had our dog come out and we were eventually able to track him down to one of the buildings” in the apartment complex, Leman said.
The man was set to be arraigned in 41-A District Court in Shelby Township Jan. 11 on charges of fleeing and eluding, obstructing police and possibly receiving and concealing stolen property. He will likely face more charges in Clinton Township for the alleged theft of the vehicle.
Leman said no one was hurt and there was only minor damage, including to a Shelby Township police cruiser.
