League: Oakland Activities Association Red Division
Last season: 6-4
Opening game: 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at Birmingham Groves

Offense

Key player: Cameron Fields, senior, wide receiver

The Lakers offense, which averaged more than 26 points per game last season, returns six starters and features Fields at receiver.

“He’s probably one of the top 15 players in the state,” said assistant coach Jamie Thomas. “He’s kind of an all-purpose-type kid for us.”

Fields finished with close to 1,000 all-purpose yards last season, and Thomas hopes to create space for the speedster with their spread attack.

Special teams

Key player: Aaron White, senior, return man

White returns after an injury-plagued junior campaign. As a sophomore, he returned seven kicks for touchdowns, and Thomas believes he’s found his old form.

“I don’t care what level you’re on, if you return seven kicks, you’re a bad boy,” the coach said.

Coach’s outlook

The Lakers lost two double-overtime games last season and an additional two games by less than 10 points.

Thomas believes his squad can turn those losses into wins as long as the offensive line plays its part.

“We have all the skill in the world,” Thomas said. “We just have to make sure we protect our quarterback.”
