League: Macomb Area Conference Gold Division
Last season: 3-6
Opening game: 7 p.m. Aug. 27 against Roseville High at home

Offense

Key player: Scott Postl, senior, quarterback

Scoring nearly 27 points per game last season was pretty impressive for a Tower squad that found the win column only three times. More of the same, as far as points are concerned, is expected this season, especially with Postl under center for the third straight year.

“Experience running the offense is a huge advantage for him,” coach Dan Eberhardt said of his senior. “We’re going to put a lot of responsibility on him to make the right calls and make the right plays.”

He did plenty of both in 2008, passing for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns.

“We’re going to be good offensively,” Eberhardt said. “We’ve got a lot of skilled kids on that side of the ball.”

Special teams

Key player: Rayshawn Nance, junior, return man

Eberhardt went with Nance as his key guy on special teams for one main reason.

“He’s a great athlete,” the coach said. “He’s the kind of guy that can change the game on a return. We need him to swing some plays in our favor.”

Coach’s outlook

Improvement was the constant theme Eberhardt went back to while talking about the 2009 season. He knows expectations are much higher, especially after suffering through the 3-6 campaign from last year.

“We have to improve from one week to the next, that’s our main goal,” he said. “The level of play we feel we should be at is the playoffs. That’s what we’re focused on.”

Tower had made the playoffs four consecutive years before last season.
