TROY — In a battle between Oakland Activities Association Red foes, Troy High made a statement early Aug. 26 when its boys soccer team downed Rochester High 2-0.

Troy’s goals were netted a little more than two minutes apart in the first half.

Senior Nate Hicklin scored the first goal of the game at the 18:46 mark on an indirect free kick inside the box. Senior Sean Cunningham was credited with the second goal with 16:30 remaining in the half.

Troy dominated possession throughout most of the game, but in the final 20 minutes, the Falcons got a second wind.

“I thought for the most part we carried the game,” Troy coach Dave Hicklin said. “(Rochester) worked extremely hard. They put a lot of pressure on us and caused us some problems. They’ve got some good players in important positions.”

The Falcons’ defense kept them in the game, holding Troy scoreless through the second half on six shots.

“I felt we played really well with the exception of the five-minute period that we got scored on twice,” Rochester coach Chris Purgatori said. “I think the second half we played them very, very well. We had some people playing out of position, and we were doing some scrambling. But I’m very happy with our performance, especially how we stepped up in the second half.”

Troy improved to 4-0 on season; Rochester fell to 2-2.

The squads meet again in league play Sept. 15 at Rochester.
