League: Catholic League Central Division
Last season: 3-6
Opening game: 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at East Grand Rapids

Offense

Key player: Robert Bolden, senior, quarterback

Bolden committed to Penn State before the start of the 2009 season and will end his career as a four-year starter under center.

“He’s stronger, but it’s the leadership — that he’s been there for three years,” coach George Porritt said of Bolden’s strengths this year.

Bolden helped guide the Eaglets to the Division 3 state championship game as a sophomore, and getting back there and winning a state title is just about the only thing that he has yet to accomplish.

“Every kid’s goal, in the back of their mind, is (a state title),” Porritt said. “(Bolden’s) work ethic is very good, and he’s got a very good offensive line this year. That’s really going to help.”

Special teams

Key player: Jonathon Gibson, senior, gunner

Gibson is a running back on offense, but his kick and punt coverage is invaluable to the Eaglets.

“Jonathon Gibson was there last year, and he’s there this year,” Porritt said. “He makes a real difference in the special teams.”

Coach’s outlook

After missing the playoffs last year — the Eaglets’ first miss since 2003 — St. Mary’s is looking to their veteran defense and quarterback to get them back in the race for a Catholic League and state title.

“These kids really worked hard in the offseason,” Porritt said. “And these guys have been around and understand the traditions that are St. Mary’s football.”
