League: Macomb Area Conference Silver Division
Last season: 5-5
Opening game: 7 p.m. Aug. 28 against Mount Clemens High at home

Offense

Key player: Danny Larkins, sophomore, receiver

It’s somewhat ironic that a team like Madison, known for running the ball, would have a sophomore receiver as its key player, but that’s just how good Larkins is. A year ago, he led the team in receiving, averaging nearly 18 yards per catch, and is a constant threat from any position on the field.

“I expect us to open things up more this year,” coach Drake Wilkins said. “We’re going to throw the ball more than we have in the past, and in doing so, Danny is going to play an even more significant role.”

Special teams

Key player: Danny Larkins, sophomore, kicker/punter return

Offense, defense, why not special teams, as well.A year ago, he led the team in kick-return yardage, taking two back for touchdowns.

“He’s a great athlete,” Wilkins said. “We expect him to make some plays here as well.”

Coach’s outlook

Wilkins said he expects Fitzgerald to be the favorite in the Silver after the Spartans rolled to a 4-1 record and a division crown last season.

Even so, if healthy, he expects his Eagles to be right in the mix.

“As long as we are able to avoid the injury bug, I really think we’ll be in contention with whoever is there,” Wilkins said. “Fitzgerald is the team to beat, but if we play like I know we can, I feel like we’ll be good enough to give them a run for their money.”
