League: Macomb Area Offense Garrett is back leading the Crusaders’ offense, and if offseason work is any barometer, he’s ready to take the next step. “He’s a kid that’s gone to many throwing, speed, strength and agility camps this summer,” coach Joe Politowicz said. “He’s throwing the ball very well, and if he has time, we’ll be successful. He’s a really hard worker and a really good student.” Garrett has a couple of versatile weapons at his disposal in senior backs Steven Jackson and Keaton Lashley. Jackson is the primary workhorse at running back, and Lashley returns to the lineup after winning team MVP honors as a receiver last year. Andre Fisher anchors the offensive line and is a three-year starter. Special teams Lashley is capable of giving the Crusaders instant offense at running back and wide receiver, but the return game may be where he’s the biggest threat. “He’s a game-breaker, and he can do it on offense or break it open on special teams,” Politowicz said. “He can play where we want him — secondary, wide out, running back or return man.” Coach’s outlook “We’re opening it up this year,” Politowicz said. “We’re running a little more spread, and in the process, converting everything we’ve done in the past.” — Brad D.
