Elderly bicyclist injured in crash

STERLING HEIGHTS — An 81-year-old resident sustained head injuries Aug. 24 after he was struck by a vehicle on 18 Mile just before 9 a.m.

According to Sterling Heights police, the man was riding his bicycle westbound between Mound and Van Dyke when a minivan heading in the same direction collided with him.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the man pulled out in front of the vehicle as he attempted to cross from the south side of 18 Mile to the north, and the driver, a 68-year-old Washington Township woman, was unable to stop in time, according to police.

The victim initially was transported to Beaumont Hospital, Troy, before transferring to Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, for treatment of head injuries resulting from the crash, said Sterling Heights Police Lt. Luke Riley.

At press time, the man remained in critical condition, and Riley said it was unclear whether his injuries were considered life threatening.

Portions of 18 Mile were shut down for about two hours as police looked into the incident. Riley said the accident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed against the driver.
