ROYAL OAK — A driver involved in two hit-and-run accidents in a matter of 10 minutes, one of which left a passenger dead and several others seriously injured, has been arrested and appeared to be intoxicated, according to police.

Michigan State Police said the driver was involved in a hit-and-run accident at a McDonald’s on Van Dyke, near 11 Mile Road, in Warren at approximately 1:49 a.m. July 20, before hitting another vehicle — a van at 2 a.m. — on the exit ramp of I-696 at Woodward Avenue.

Witnesses said after the van was hit, it rolled over, killing a passenger. The driver and other passengers in the vehicle were taken to Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan State Police said.

The suspect fled, parking his vehicle not far from the scene before trying to escape on foot. Royal Oak police began tracking the suspect with a K-9, and the United States Coast Guard assisted in the search.

The suspect was observed walking in the area several hours after the crash and was taken into custody without incident by Royal Oak police. He was then transferred to the Michigan State Police.

The suspect appeared to be intoxicated, Michigan State Police said.

The deceased passenger did not have identification and has not been identified yet, police said.
