Farmington senior-to-be verbally commits to play at MSU
FARMINGTON — There aren’t too many 16-year-olds who have a clear idea as to what the rest of their life will entail.
So while Farmington High catcher Joel Fisher may not have everything perfectly mapped out just yet, he has decided where he’ll be after his 2010 graduation.
“I know it’s kind of early to decide, but I always saw myself as a Spartan,” Fisher said last week in reference to his decision to verbally commit to Michigan State University to play baseball in the spring of 2011. “I’ve been talking to (the MSU coaching staff) for a while. I’ve gotten to know them real well, and that’s a program I want to be a part of. I think it could be a great team, and I want to help get it to that point.”
Fisher can’t sign his National Letter of Intent until November of this year, but he said he’s never wavered from his decision to commit to the green and white.
“Baseball or not, I always figured I’d end up going there,” Fisher said. “My mom went there, so I was kind of brought up as a Spartan fan. When they offered me the scholarship, I figured this is what would be best for me.”
During his junior season, Fisher hit .397 with one home run while backstopping the Falcons’ defense. He plays summer baseball with the Michigan Bulls — ranked the No. 1 18-and-under travel team in Michigan in 2008 by the United States Sports Specialty Association.
Though he has committed, Fisher admitted he hasn’t spent too much time thinking about college baseball beyond that.
“I still have a senior season to focus on, and that’s what I’m working for,” he said. “I have a lot of work to do personally to continue to develop my game. There’s still a lot I want to accomplish, both as a team and as an individual at the high school level.”
