BLOOMFIELD HILLS — The Birmingham United girls lacrosse squad had been down in every single playoff game leading into the Division 1 state final against Bloomfield Hills Marian June 6 at Bloomfield Hills Lahser.

So when the Bulldogs were down again by one goal with just over 20 minutes remaining, they didn’t worry.

“Considering the emotions of the game … I think we kept our composure, which was big for this type of game,” United coach Jen Dunbar said.

Keeping their poise, the Bulldogs scored four of the final six goals for a 13-11 victory and their third straight state title.

United attacked with a balanced offense, getting three goals each from seniors Julia Carnovale and Rachel Miller, and sophomore Carly Signorello.

Junior Julie Hemphill led the Mustangs with three goals of her own.

After their first state-final appearance in school history, Marian finishes 15-4-1 overall; United ends 17-5-1.

“I thought it was a great game …  I thought both teams played great,” Marian coach Ginny Heth said. “They just got us in the end, and that’s the way it goes.”
