Mount Clemens St. Mary Catholic School’s varsity girls soccer team wrapped up a historic season with a Catholic Youth Organization title Oct. 22.
The team — made up of seventh- and eighth-graders — beat Allen Park St. Francis Cabrini 1-0 in the final at Madison Heights Bishop Foley to finish the year 13-0 and claim the program’s first title.
“It’s absolutely very fulfilling,” coach Jim Beyer said. “Each year, we’ve progressed and built on the previous year, and this year, we reached the ultimate pinnacle of what we can do in the program.
“It was a very good season.”
Julia Quinto scored the lone goal in the final off an assist from Megan Manczyk while goalkeeper Natalie Cizmas earned the shutout to lead the Mountaineers in the championship game.
“The final was a very hard-fought game,” Beyer said. “Cabrini had a very good team and played us very tough until the final whistle. It was a very challenging game right to the end.”
St. Mary went 10-0 during the regular season before rolling through the playoffs. They opened the postseason with a 1-0 win against Warren St. Anne and used a last-minute goal to top Royal Oak Shrine 2-1 in a semifinal.
The Mountaineers outscored their opponents 50-5 and never trailed throughout the entire year.
“We really had a balanced attack; it was spread out pretty well,” Beyer said. “Our defense was very strong.
“It was a total team effort. The girls were very unselfish and had great chemistry. It was a joy to see that. They played well together.”
