TROY — The difference between Troy High and Rochester High Aug. 28 on Troy’s home field was one inch.

With under 10 seconds remaining in the game and two yards to go, Troy’s defense stopped the Falcons an inch from the goal line, giving the Colts a 26-20 victory on opening night of the 2008 prep football season.

“Everybody just went in on him (Rochester senior running back Ziair Hill). We knew what was up, and we knew we had to make a stand,” Troy senior captain Will Schwarz said of the final play.

“It was unbelievable.”

The Colts took control of the game early, with a touchdown run from junior running back Chris Wheeler and a safety by Schwarz in the first quarter.

Troy Senior Kyle Payton made it 16-0 at halftime with a 5-yard scamper of his own.

The Falcons responded when sophomore Nick Bradley hit senior Taylor Brighi for a 7-yard score with 8:36 remaining in the third.

Three minutes later, Rochester cut the lead to 16-13 when junior Alec Camp returned an interception 47 yards.

Troy got its final scores on a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior Kevin Muma to senior James Andrzejewski with 30 second left in the third and a 46-yard field goal by Muma with just over 11 minutes left in the game.

Hill cut the lead to six with a 1-yard plunge with 5:07 left.

“The kids played their hearts out,” Rochester coach Drew Kisabeth said. “We had the game on their turf.”

Rochester (0-1) looks to bounce back against Farmington Hills Harrison at 7 p.m. at home.

Troy (1-0) hopes to make it two in a row when it meets Royal Oak High at 7 p.m. on the Ravens’ home field.
