Little League, big effort
L’Anse Creuse youth baseball takes district title

The Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse Little League junior baseball team won the District 6 championship July 14.

The team, made up of 13- and 14-year-olds, defeated a squad from Grosse Pointe 6-3 in the final.

Prior to that, L’Anse Creuse had gone 3-0 in pool play before beating teams from Macomb Township and Harper Woods in the knockout rounds.

“Every boy contributed,” manager Dave Hergott said. “Everybody pulled for everybody. We got by a very tough district.”

The district title was the organization’s third at that level; previous teams were successful in 2003 and 2004.

L’Anse Creuse advanced to take on a team from Taylor in the sectional round, but was knocked out of the tournament after losing a pair of close games in a doubleheader. Both games were tied going into the final inning.

“I’m very proud of them, they all played with a lot of heart and pride,” Hergott said.
