Local coaches lead state’s top prep football players in East-West game

Eighty-eight of the state’s top football players will get one last shot at the high school game at 2 p.m. July 19 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
The 28th annual Michigan High School Football Coaches Association’s All-Star Football Game will feature 44 players from Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, Monroe, St. Clair, Lapeer, Sanilac, Huron and Tuscola counties against 44 players from the rest of the state. Tickets are $10 at the Spartan Stadium gate.
Leading the East squad are five coaches from C & G Newspapers’ coverage area.
Warren De La Salle’s Paul Verska is the head coach of the East and Warren Cousino’s Mike Powell will act as the first assistant. Chris Bell of Lake Orion High, Mike Lewis of De La Salle and Brad Nettles of Cousino join them on the sidelines with Dave Mifsud of Dearborn High.
Powell will get one last chance to coach his son, Rick, who is slated to play quarterback for the East.
Other players from our coverage area on the East roster are Steve Wieczorek (Grosse Pointe North), Jimmy Saros (Grosse Pointe South), Erick Thompson (Macomb L’Anse Creuse North), Nick Gallina (Troy High), Rodney Hush (Macomb Dakota), Caulton Ray IV (Birmingham Brother Rice), Josh Renel (Rochester Adams), Ricky Shorkey (Clinton Township Chippewa Valley), Chris Reeves (Ferndale High), Kyle Torzey (De La Salle), Ethan Ruhland (Lake Orion), Jason Semmes (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) and Ross Sanders (Sterling Heights Parkway Christian).
