Bosnic, Rieck win CPS Board of Education seats

CLAWSON — Mike Bosnic and Kara Rosso Rieck won four-year seats on the Clawson Public Schools Board of Education in the May 6 election, according to unofficial election results.

Bosnic was the only candidate on the ballot, with Rieck running a write-in campaign against fellow write-in candidates Paul Garfield and Jeffery Schachinger.

Bosnic led all vote-getters, with 678 votes. Rieck had an unofficial total of 198; Garfield garnered 124 write-in votes; and Schachinger had 41.

“This is definitely unofficial,” Clawson Clerk Machele Kukuk said. “We counted every write-in, and it will be up to the Board of Canvassers to officially declare the winners.”

Bosnic, 39, said in the next four years he wants to make sure the district communicates with the public on various issues, including building improvements and Schools of Choice.

“We need to continue to hire the best teachers we can and deliver a good education to our students,” he said.

Bosnic said he wanted to thank everyone who got out and voted and took part in the process.

Rieck, 30, who is not related to current board member Scott Rieck, said she spent the day talking with voters at various precincts.

“I’m really glad I did take the time to do that,” she said. “I got to meet more members of the community and hear their different concerns, which is a good thing.”

She said she is planning on getting herself familiar with how school boards work through courses before she takes office.

“I want to take a look at the surveys that were recently completed by the community to see what they feel is the biggest priorities (for the district),” Rieck said.

Just under 8 percent of registered voters hit the polls for the election, for a total of 774 of the 9,724 registered voters in the city.

“It was a pretty uneventful day,” Kukuk said. “The turnout was a little higher than I expected.”

The turnout was lower than the 2007 and 2006 May school board elections, but both of those had proposals on the ballot, as well.
