WARREN — Three people, including a Warren police officer, were injured when a patrol car collided with a passenger vehicle on Schoenherr, just south of 11 Mile Road, at about 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 3.

At press time, police said the officer, the driver of the passenger vehicle, and the driver’s son had been treated at Warren’s Henry Ford Bi-County Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. The officer was treated and released, while the driver, 68, of Warren, and his 44-year-old son were originally listed in stable condition, Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said.

“They’re doing OK. He [the officer] was never admitted to the hospital,” Dwyer said.

According to Warren Police Detective Francis Smith, the officer was responding to an incident with his emergency equipment activated and was traveling south on Schoenherr, near McKinley, when he collided with a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am.

Smith said the driver of the Grand Am was reportedly turning left from southbound Schoenherr onto eastbound McKinley when he struck the patrol car, which had crossed over behind him into a northbound lane to avoid traffic in the leftmost southbound lane.

“The subject was southbound turning left onto McKinley and he cut in front of the officer,” said Smith, one of the department’s crash investigators. “He did not see or hear the officer.”

Smith said the patrol car’s lights and siren were active at the time of the crash.

An investigation remained ongoing at press time.

“He [the officer] was within guidelines, the rules and regulations of the department,” Dwyer said.

The commissioner declined to comment on whether any traffic violations would be issued as a result of the accident, pending the outcome of the crash investigation.

Alcohol or drugs were not believed to have been factors in the accident, Dwyer said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Warren police at (586) 574-4881.
