WARREN — Police said a collision involving a car and a bicycle resulted in the death of a 47-year-old Warren man on Jan. 6.
According to Warren Police Lt. Louis Galasso, David Francis Hampel died at the hospital of injuries sustained in an accident at the intersection of Hoover and Meadowbrook at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 5.
“A 16-year-old Warren teenager was driving from Cousino High School. He left the school premises and was proceeding south on Hoover in the curb lane, by all indications doing nothing negligent,” Galasso said. “He felt a large pop on his windshield and then watched the windshield collapse and had no idea what had occurred.
“He looked in his rearview mirror and noticed a bike in the street.”
Galasso said the teen, who attends a Warren high school other than Cousino, exited the1991 Buick and observed the victim. The teen reportedly was attempting to use his cell phone to call 911 when a Warren police patrol vehicle arrived at the scene and began offering assistance to Hampel.
“He was unresponsive when the officers were rendering first aid. [The officers] immediately called for Warren fire,” Galasso said.
Warren firefighters and paramedics, stationed nearby at Hoover and Common, were on the scene quickly to offer medical treatment.
Hampel was transported to St. John Macomb Hospital, where he reportedly underwent surgery. He was later pronounced dead.
Galasso said the investigation into the incident remained ongoing, but that there was no indication the teenage driver had been drinking or using drugs before the accident. He said the teen had a valid operator’s license and a clean driving record.
Toxicology results were still pending at press time.
