Sheriff’s Office searching for armed Burger King bandits

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Three employees were accosted at gunpoint and forced back into the Burger King on Hall Road at Romeo Plank as they were leaving work the early morning of June 23.

Two masked men, both armed with handguns, approached the three at the restaurant’s back door while they locked up for the night around 2:20 a.m. June 23. Capt. John Roberts of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said the suspects told the employees to go back into the building, where they robbed the restaurant and took some personal belongings.

Before robbing the restaurant’s cash register and rummaging through the employees’ belongings, however, the suspects forced the three into separate walk-in freezers — two in one freezer, the other in a different location.

No composite sketches have been released and descriptions are vague, Roberts said, as the employees did not get a good look at the gunmen or their weapons.

The three walked away with no injuries and no other robberies were reported in the area around that time.

The Sheriff’s Office did not have any leads at press time and investigators were not sure whether the suspects were on foot or in a vehicle.

“(The employees) were basically locked in the freezer the whole time so they didn’t see them leave,” Roberts said. “There’s still some people to talk to, but we don’t have any suspects at the current time.”

The suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

No gunshots were fired, according to what the detained employees heard. The restaurant was closed for business when the incident occurred.

As for armed robberies at establishments in Macomb Township, Roberts said they do not happen very often.

“Fortunately, it’s pretty rare,” he said.
