STERLING HEIGHTS — City administrators have tapped Lt. Michael Reese to take the helm of the Sterling Heights Police Department from retiring Chief David Vinson.

Reese’s appointment as interim chief was announced the afternoon of June 26, the day prior to Vinson’s official departure.

In a prepared statement, City Manager Mark Vanderpool said Reese had the “experience, knowledge and expertise” necessary for the position.

“I am pleased to have Mike join the city’s outstanding team of directors during this interim period,” said Vanderpool. “His demonstrated leadership, communication and team-building skills will prove beneficial. The city will evaluate a permanent replacement once the interim period has expired, which should be no later than October.”

Reese, 53, has worked for the Sterling Heights Police Department for 29 years. Since 2000, he has served in an executive capacity in the Office of the Chief, acting during that time as the department’s official spokesperson.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Siena Heights University and is a graduate of both the FBI National Academy and Eastern Michigan University’s School of Staff and Command.

Reese has resided in Sterling Heights for more than 30 years. He and his wife, Darlene, have two adult sons, David and Drew.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to work with the city manager, mayor, City Council and city staff in maintaining Sterling Heights’ distinction as one of the safest big cities in the state and country,” Reese said in a prepared statement. “I’m extremely dedicated to the law enforcement profession and look forward to bringing that same commitment and high energy level to this position.”
