Police search for Chase Bank robber

SOUTHFIELD — Police need the public’s help in finding an unknown man who robbed a Chase Bank Aug. 20.

Southfield police officers got to the Chase Bank in the 28000 block of Northwestern Highway at around 1:15 p.m., just minutes after they were notified of an unarmed robbery there.

Lt. Nick Loussia said the man allegedly walked up to a bank teller and handed her a note. While the teller was reading it, the man told her that he wanted all of her money and not to hit the alarm. She gave him the money and he left the bank, which is when the teller called police.

A witness described the suspect as a light-skinned black man, about 5 feet six inches tall and 130 pounds. He has a thin build, brown eyes and black hair.

“No one saw him leave,” Loussia said, adding that they don’t know if the suspect left on foot or by vehicle. Officers did not find the man when they checked the area.

Police didn’t know exactly how much money the man stole, but Loussia said that to prevent copycat crimes, they don’t typically release that information.

He said there were customers in the bank at the time, but no one else knew what was happening during the robbery.

Now police are hoping someone recognizes the man in the surveillance photograph.

“That’s what we’re hoping, yeah, if anybody can recognize the individual,” Loussia said. “What we ask is citizens to take a look at it. It’s too early to tell, but there typically is (a reward).”

When the man is caught, he faces charges of bank robbery and up to life in prison.

Loussia said that if anyone is ever in this situation, the best thing to do is what the teller did — cooperate.

“That’s what most bank security and that’s we recommend to the tellers,” Loussia said. “Be a good witness.”

Anyone with information about this crime or the suspect pictured is asked to contact Detective Chris Helgert with the Southfield police at (248) 796-5500.
